A Backyard with a Little Magic
From an empty lakeside lot to an outdoor environment shaped around the people who call it home.
THE BEGINNING
Nothing but mud, dirt, and possibility.
When the homeowners moved into their new development, their backyard was an unfinished blank slate beside a man-made lake.
The opportunity was to create a complete outdoor living space: one that could accommodate recreation, entertaining, and relaxation while feeling connected to the home itself.
THE PERSONAL CONNECTION
Designed for the people, not just the property.
During the initial consultation, I noticed Disney-inspired details throughout the clients’ home. That gave me a glimpse into what felt personal and meaningful to them.
The design brought together a pool, deck, hot tub, pergola, seating areas, and outdoor lighting. Custom character-inspired touches were woven into the concept as a reflection of the homeowners’ personality, rather than simply added as decoration.
The arrangement of each zone was developed to create an intuitive flow between activity, gathering, and quieter moments.

DESIGN BEYOND THE DRAWING
Finding a way forward.
During review, the city initially questioned the patio and seating areas near the lake because of restrictions concerning permanent structures. The proposed pool location itself was acceptable.
Rather than immediately remove those areas, I reviewed the relevant definitions and spent several hours discussing how the proposed design fit the city’s stated requirements.
The concerns were resolved, and the city representative provided the required sign-off accepting the design.
This was a project-specific example of practical problem-solving and client advocacy—not a permitting service offered by the studio.
THE RESULT
A backyard that feels like theirs.
What began as a muddy lot became a connected outdoor environment with places to swim, gather, relax, and make memories. More importantly, the design reflected the people who would enjoy it.
